It started as most scandals in history tend to; a media furor around some public official doing something bad. Something, really bad. Donald Trump was reported to have abused his position by strong arming newly elected President of Ukraine, President Zelensky to give him dirt on his political opponent Joe Biden so he could lance him in the run up to the 2020 US presidential election. If Zelensky wouldn’t give up the skinny on Biden, President Trump was going to withhold $400 million in US aid to Ukraine. The impeachment ran at high intensity and if the media and the democrats were to be believed, Trump’s presidency was finished.
Stories have a remarkable effect on our minds. They guide us, they inform us, they bond us and divide us. They give us our sense of self and place in the world and afford us meaning in an almost unending sea of disappointment and pain. They also do something else, influence us beyond anything we tend to notice. Once we feel satisfied we understand what the story is we tend to wrap it up and place it in the archives leaving us with the impression that we know what happened. So imagine our surprise when President Trump released the transcript of the corruption call in question. Nobody expected President Trump to release the transcript of the call, not least Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats. With the transcript released people were free to make up their own minds independent of the stories being fed to them by both Pelosi, the Democrats and the wider media.
So surprised were the Democrats that President Trump had released the transcript that Adam Schiff had to make up his own version to read out to congress to be beamed around the world. He later claimed it was “parody” but those kinds of claims get lost at sea when people think they already understand the story especially as the media and Democrats geared up for Russia 2.0. It turns out that what the Democrats were calling an impeachable offence was President Trump asking Ukraine’s President Zelensky to look in to evidence of corruption. What kind of corruption might that have been?
Glenn Beck of Blaze TV has recently been putting out some excellent albeit complex stories revolving around the Democratic party and corruption in Ukraine. The corruption is so deep and so complex that his videos have been full two hour presentations whereby he lays out all of the facts and context in to one over arching theme. In his latest presentation “The Democrats Hydra“, towards the second half he turns his attention to a man called Alec Ross, the State Department’s first senior adviser for innovation. Ross led an initiative called “Civil Society 2.0” which was then secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s “Manhattan Project“. The initiative was launched on November 3, 2009 and promised to “help grassroots organizations around the world use digital technology to tell their stories, build their memberships and support bases, and connect to their community of peers around the world.”
Civil Society 2.0 promised to deploy “a team of experienced technologists to work with civil society organizations around the globe to provide training and support to build their digital capacity.” They would help civil society groups to build websites, blog, start a text messaging campaign, build an online community and learn how to leverage social networks for a cause. It promised to be a global force for good both within and across borders speaking truth to power. Civil Society 2.0 believes “at its essence, civil society is the result of individuals beyond family, state or commerce coming together across cultures and geographies to pursue common goals.” They want to help nations modernise and compete in this new rapidly advancing global economy lest they get left behind. It promises to empower the helpless to fight climate change.
On March 12th 2013 Alec Ross started doing the media rounds including an interview published by Mashable on the virtues of “digital diplomacy”. They talked about 21st Century Statecraft and the role they played in Syria to help Syrians communicate and avoid detection during the uprising. They bring tech experts from around the world to hold “tech camps” whereby “on an intensive basis over a couple of days, grassroots civil society organizations get tech training from rock star American technologists… we’ve now trained more than 1100 organizations from more than 80 countries.” These tech camps had been in operation in and around Ukraine since 2010 and were highly successful and well funded.
All of the framing around these initiatives and tech camps is tightly focused around the idea of enabling democracy helping grassroots organisations upend despot dictators with non violent means and the use of powerful communication technologies. With Hillary’s help, everyone can be free. Or so we are told. On the 11th of November 2013, the deputy President of Ukraine, Oleg Tsarov announces he has proof of the USA Kyiv “Tech Camp” staging a civil war in Ukraine.
This was followed by the collapse of an agreement between the EU and Ukraine for Ukraine to join the EU. Protesters began swarming on 21st November 2013 in Independence Square in Kyiv. Numbers swelled 3 days later to 250,000 with Twitter and Facebook playing a key role in allowing near instantaneous organised gatherings to express their discontent. The protests lasted for three months ending in the ousting of then president Viktor Yanukovych. Given the training and support offered to freedom fighting Ukrainians by Hillary’s tech camps, civil society organisations announced rounding success.
On February the 4th 2014 a Youtuber published a conversation alleged to be between then US assistant Secretary of state – Victoria Newland & US ambassador to the Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt. The contents of the phone call appear to be of Newland telling Pyatt what new government was going to be inserted in to Ukraine. While it appears the Ukrainians thought they were fighting for democracy, this phone call suggests otherwise.
Russia Today offered a handy explainer.
In that same month of February articles start to emerge accusing NGO’s of money laundering with one claiming proof that the Ukraine revolution groups were funded by the US and a gentleman called “Pierre Omidyar”. IO9 ran a story asking why the US Embassy in Ukraine was supporting spyware and hackathons. The embassy was giving away free subscriptions to a piece of software called “flexi spy“. Once this app is installed incognito on someone’s computer or phone you can record everywhere they go and every single thing they do, down to the clicks from their device. In the months following, forty people including a pregnant woman were murdered in cold blood in what came to be called the “Odessa Massacre” (viewer discretion advised).
When asked about the involvement of US funded Neo Nazi groups in Ukraine, Victoria Nuland initially focused on flowers and families. When pressed again she admitted the involvement of unsavoury characters.
Shortly after the unrest and installment of the new government John Kerry’s friend, Devon Archer proceeded to join Ukraine’s biggest gas company Burisma, along with Hunter Biden. George Friedman, who is the Founder and CEO of Stratfor, the ‘Shadow CIA’ firm said “It really was the most blatant coup in history.” What wasn’t known at the time is that in April of that year Devon Archer had a meeting with then Vice President Joe Biden at the White House “late in to the night”. It was only two days after that meeting Hunter Biden then joined the Ukrainian gas board. Three days after that, Joe Biden went to Ukraine with promises of U.S citizens hard earned cash in the form of loan guarantees. While Biden was there he threatened to withhold $1 billion in US aid if Ukraine didn’t call off an investigation in to a shady character called Mykola Zlochevsk who was embezzling money in to Burisma.
Documents leaked this month show tens of millions of dollars being transferred to a slush fund owned by John Kerry, Biden Jr and Michael Choudry. A top Mitt Romney adviser, Joseph Cofer Black, an ex CIA agent and director of the National Counter terrorism Center from 1999 to 2002 also served on the very same board of gas executives as Hunter Biden in the same time period. On the 20th November 2019 Ukrainian MPs held a press conference and “demanded the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, investigate suspicions of the legalization of $7.4 billion by the “family” of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych through the American investment fund Franklin Templeton Investments, which they said has ties to the U.S. Democratic Party. “
$7.4 billion is an awful lot of money to investigate. Maybe President Trumps phone call had less to do with his apparent corruption and more to do with Joe Biden’s and the party he was hoping to lead. All for a larp.
